Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain in adults. It occurs when the tissue that connects your heel to the rest of your foot (the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed. The vast majority of plantar fasciitis patients experience relief with non-surgical treatments, such as orthotic inserts. However, around 5% of patients require surgery.
Dr. Mikkel Jarman specializes in heel pain diagnosis and treatment. Heel pain is the most common foot symptom we see here at Preferred Foot & Ankle. Dr. Jarman also specializes in identifying the underlying cause of heel pain, and finding a permanent treatment solution so you can be pain free and mobile again!
There are a variety of issues that may cause heel pain. The most common is plantar fasciitis, but others include calcaneal stress fractures, gout, and infracalcaneal bursitis. When you come to Preferred Foot & Ankle Specialists, we perform a series of diagnostics to determine the cause of your heel pain. Only then can we determine the best treatment method.
Your Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel. When this tendon becomes inflamed, it is known as Achilles tendinitis. Common causes include an increase in exercise and bone spurs. Treatment includes rest, restriction of movement, and physical therapy. Surgery is only considered if pain continues after six months of treatment.
Ankle instability is marked by repeated ankle turning, feeling unstable or wobbly when walking, and chronic discomfort, swelling, and tenderness. It is often caused when the ankle does not heal properly after a sprain. This greatly affects balance and increases risk of future injury. Non-surgical treatment options include bracing and physical therapy.
A sprained ankle is essentially an injury caused by your ligaments being stretched beyond their healthy range, and the extent to which they stretch depends on how much damage has been done. The two most common reasons for sprain include twisting your foot or moving it out from under you when jumping off something like a wall or stairs.
Athlete’s foot is a highly contagious fungal infection that occurs between the toes or on the soles of your feet. It’s caused by microscopic fungi, and begins in toe area before spreading to other areas like hair and nails. The most common type of athlete’s foot called trichophyton rubrum can be contracted from being barefoot at public places such as locker rooms, showers, movie theaters etc…
Bone spurs are bony growths that typically develop where bone meets bone. These growths can be of varying size, ranging from less than a centimeter to up to ten centimeters in length; however the most common is between two and four millimeters long. They take years for these developments to form which means age is one of its biggest risk factors.
A bunion is a bone-like bump that forms at the base joint of your big toe. It forms when your big toe is repeatedly pushed inward toward the other toes. Due to their propensity to wear pointy-toed shoes, women are more prone to bunions than men are. We provide both non-surgical treatment (i.e. conservative care) and surgical bunion removal.
Diabetes is an issue that affects people’s feet in many different ways. One way it can affect your foot health, for example, is by causing circulation issues which may lead to the development of a diabetic ulcer on one or both of your heals. Diabetic Foot Care guidelines are important as prevention and treatment before these serious medical problems arise and interfere with mobility.
The sole of your foot should never touch the ground completely when you are standing. Acquired flat feet disorder is a result from collapsing arches and will cause your toes to curl inwards, stretching out the entire soles towards touching or coming close to touching. Our feet are considered the foundation of our body. Hence, flat feet can cause problems with the skeletal structure and bring the joints out of alignment.
Foot drop is a type of gait abnormality that affects some people’s ability to walk. Patients with foot drop have difficulty lifting their toes while they are walking, which sometimes causes them to drag or scuffle the foot. Foot drop is usually caused by a neurological disorder, although occasionally the cause may be muscular in nature. Other causes of foot drop are stroke or trauma due to injury or as the result of surgery to the knee or hip.
A foot fracture is a very common injury and one that can be sustained in many ways. It may happen as the result of an acute trauma, such as after being hit by something or someone else’s quick movements while playing sports like basketball. Foot fractures are also common among people who have high arches where there is more stress on their feet. There are four main categories; Displaced, non-displaced, open fracture, and closed fracture.
The toenail fungus is a relatively common condition that, unfortunately, becomes more likely as we age. It’s not just about having an older immune system or circulation problems; many people with diabetes and other related conditions are also susceptible to nail infections of all types. Nails provide the last line of protection between your feet and various germs so it’s important for them to be healthy in order for you keep from contracting diseases.
Gout is a form of arthritis that can cause sudden, severe pain in the affected joint. The accumulation of uric crystals may lead to an attack and this often occurs at large joints such as the big toe; however, it could also affect any other area including ankles or wrists. The most common symptom of gout is intense joint pain. This pain is nearly always sudden – there’s no slow build to a gout attack. Gout is a painful, yet treatable.
Prescribed Orthotics, or custom orthotics as they’re commonly called, are shoe inserts that have been custom-made to provide relief from common foot problems. The most popular types of foot issues which these treatments can be used for include bursitis, plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, as flat feet, diabetic foot ulcers, and pain in the heel, ankle and foot.

When I arrived at the Foot and Ankle Specialist office I was in pain, lots of pain. They are the best foot doctors that I have seen in 40 years. They listen and then explain what the causes of my foot problems might be according to there diagnosis. I cannot wait to go back for my second visit.
